DIABETES PREVENTION SUPPORT GROUP

In the coming months the Community Health Center will be working with Seeds of Solidarity as the principal agency to bring this project to life! We are excited and pleased to be a part of this project that relates very well to the vision and mission of the Health Center. Workshop announcements related to this project will appear here in the near future. Check back for details! A description of the program is below.

Grow Food Everywhere for Health and Justice Launched

Winter was brightened considerably with news of a two-year grant of $45,000 per year that helps to fully fund our SOL Garden youth program, create food gardens with and for 20 low-income families in our region, and implement food producing wellness gardens at the Desmond Callan community health center and the Orange Innovation Center sites. This project is the result of a Seeds of Solidarity vision many years brewing.

The Promoting Health and Reducing Health Disparities grant awarded through the Massachusetts Attorney General's office that helps bring this vision to fruition is the result of funds obtained from AGO settlements with the pharmaceutical companies Merck, Eli Lilly and Pfizer, and the result of investigations of marketing misconduct for several blockbuster drugs.

Grants for non-profits have been shrinking and hard to come by these last few years, and we are thrilled and honored to be one of 7 organizations across the state selected out of over 200 applications! We are very pleased to help re-channel pharmaceutical company profits towards wellness and food self-reliance among low-income youth and families locally, and plan to share best practices that emerge widely.
